He’s the online wine guy that took his family business to the next level.

We actually found Gary through our friend David Siteman Garland (pretty cool how networking works right?). Since then we have been huge fans of his and immediately bought his book “Crush It!”

For those who don’t know Gary and for those that do here’s what you can learn from this oh so passionate guy who loves what he does and continues to pursue his passion:

Set goals and raise the bar each time.

Don’t listen to the haters

Always get back with people even if you’re busy (see below for an exact example on this one).

Let others see your passion for what you do.

Believe in what you do and never settle.

Let customers know they’re important.

Help others along the way.

Never stop learning.

Reinvent yourself.

These are just a few of the things you can learn from this guy. He’s on fire and his passion is very clear. Some may say he’s loud but many times it takes loud people to be heard over all the smog out there. Even though we have yet to meet him we hear nothing but good things about him and how truly genuine he is. One thing we love about him is that he continually raises the bar and reinvents himself just like he did with winelibrary to dailygrape.

And like we said about “getting back with people” here’s a fine example of when Gary tweeted back at us one day right before he had an event to go to…

We had a question come in the other day to the show that talked about a coffee shop owner who has some customers that stop in everyday for hours at a time and use their store wifi but never pay for a cup of coffee. He asked us if he should ask them to leave or just keep putting up with it.

It’s no surprise that this happens when you put up “free” wifi it’s like a blinking Vegas sign to people. In their minds they expect to use it as long as they want and you as the business owner cannot tell them when to stop. If this is the mindset of your customer then it’s not going to be pretty if you ask them to leave. Kindly ask them if they want anything to drink or need anything. If they reply “no” then just wait a bit. Now if they reply “no” with a sour look on their face as if you’re bothering them then bust out the CustoMonster 3000…kidding.

Seriously though, if they say no the first time then wait to see if they get something and if they still don’t and it’s been quite a while ask them kindly to leave. Now this is not for those that come in and briefly use the wifi and you don’t see them again for weeks. This is the customer that comes in fully knowing he is bringing his lap top or excuse me…ipad to the store and using the wifi access for as long as he wants to because in his mind “he is always right.”

Truly what you should do is put up a sign that says right under your “free wifi” that says “free with a coffee of your choice.”

Have a question for us? Send them to dearrobert(at)businessbewareshow.com
